Nyerere National Park was established in 2019 when the Tanzanian government carved out the northern part of the large Selous Game Reserve to create a new, dedicated national park, named after Tanzania's first president, Julius Nyerere, to focus on photographic safaris and conservation. It was created from the historic Selous Game Reserve, which was established in 1922.
